Serving Seniors to Host Tantalizing Wine and Food Pairing Event to Support Vulnerable San Diego Seniors
February, 2016 Client News
SAN DIEGO – Feb. 26, 2016 – Serving Seniors will host an evening of fine wine and haute cuisine at the fourth annual “Experience of a Lifetime: Uncork Your Support” on Thursday, April 7 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Kona Kai Resort in Shelter Island. The event aims to raise more than $250,000 to provide 100,000 meals through the agency’s nutrition program, which nourishes thousands of low-income and homeless seniors in San Diego County.

This year, attendees will start their evening with a reception complete with wine tasting stations, delicious tray pass hors d’oeuvres and a delightful charcuterie, while listening to live music and bidding on silent auction items. For the evening’s dining, Kona Kai Executive Chef Roy Hendrickson will create an exclusive three-course menu with fine wine pairings. From heirloom apple salad to sherry-braised short ribs, attendees will enjoy a flavorful, culinary journey.

A special part of the evening is dedicated to inspirational seniors in our community. Chosen by event sponsors, local seniors will be recognized for their unwavering support of the community and inspirational livelihoods. Details to be released in mid-March regarding the honorees.

Serving Seniors provides 2,300 meals a day at ten dining sites and personally to homebound clients in neighborhoods across San Diego County. The average income of the seniors the organization serves is only about $850 per month. The agency sees that these seniors need to often choose between medication and their next meal. In fact, 85 percent of Serving Seniors’ clients live in poverty on an average of $850 per month. The organization’s nutrition program addresses hunger and food insecurity and is one of the agency’s core programs that meet the highly specialized needs of thousands of low-income seniors in San Diego County. By supporting this event, Serving Seniors can continue to fill the plates of hundreds of seniors every day.

VIP tickets are $350 each and general admission tickets are $250 each. Sempra and SDG&E are the presenting sponsors. Additional sponsorships are available. Contact Elizabeth Berg at Serving Seniors for more information (619) 487-0605 or

About Serving Seniors
Serving Seniors is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives. Founded more than 45 years ago, the organization meets its mission by offering a coordinated wellness model that addresses many senior issues under one roof. Through its collaborative partnerships, Serving Seniors is able to provide nutrition, wellness classes, mental health services, social services, advocacy, transitional housing for homeless seniors and permanent supportive housing. This safety net of services encourages seniors to live healthier lives by addressing successful aging. As a result, it keeps seniors out of emergency rooms, reduces hospital days and delays and/or eliminates the need for long-term care. The agency has been skillfully led for more than 20 years by chief executive officer and president Paul Downey. Downey is also the immediate past president of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs (NANASP) and is a two-time appointed commissioner for the California Commission on Aging. Serving Seniors was a “Top Workplace of 2015” in the small company category by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
