For the first time ever, the iconic San Diego Convention Center lit up their sails to a beautiful pink hue to recognize October’s Breast Cancer Action Month and the positive work Susan G. Komen San Diego does in the community throughout the entire year. Komen San Diego provides free mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, care coordination, education and financial assistance for breast cancer patients’ most critical needs during treatment. Scatena Daniels has helped power the communications efforts for Komen San Diego and their annual Race for the Cure for the past four years, offering our strategic ideas and connections as well as professional management skills to spotlight their life-saving events and inspirational survivor stories on TV, radio, in print, and online.
People often believe PR is only press relations — but actually it is public relations. How do you reach the public(s) important to your cause? There are many variables, and it’s truly more than just offering stories to media. We can also connect the dots and cultivate meaningful community activations and partnerships on a larger scale.
Our director of public relations, Suzy Garcia, has a long-time strategic connection at the Convention Center from her days practicing PR and community relations in Las Vegas. So she reached out to the organization about turning the sails from white to pink and to foster a warm introduction to Komen San Diego and the amazing work they do. This led to the organization deciding to illuminate the rooftop sails and committing to send 100-person corporate team for the first time ever, to the 2018 Race.
The sails were pink from Oct. 21-27, and set against the beautiful San Diego skyline that were difficult to miss.
