Thousands of science lovers of all ages took part in a free day of interactive STEM activities and explosive fun at the nonprofit Biocom Institute Festival of Science & Engineering, San Diego’s Expo Day. The San Diego science festival is one of the largest in the U.S. Organizers report it was the largest crowd ever for the one-day expo, with 26,143 people attending. Last year, just more than 24,000 attended. The ninth annual expo day kicks off the 10-day San Diego science festival, presented by Illumina Foundation.
Tens of thousands of science enthusiasts enjoyed a full day of science fun, with exploding rockets, edgy science experiments, math rappers, mobile science labs, all-girl robotics teams, DNA extractions, derby cars that can race at the speed of the internet, a meet and greet with the “Power Rangers,” and more than 130 exhibits and stage performances. Everyone’s favorite math rappers – The Music Notes – returned to Expo Day this year. Through rhythm and rhyme they break down math concepts from simple addition to advanced algebra. Fleet Science Center, General Atomics, and Mad Science captivated audiences with explosive STEM fun. The experts at Ecovivarium gave guests an up close and personal experience to reptiles who call Southern California home.
Through the San Diego science festival, organizers from Biocom Institute aim to expand the general public’s understanding of the relevancy of science and engineering in everyday lives, and hope local students and families will find that spark that will inspire a path to a STEM career, and join the workforce right here in our region. Exhibitors include world-class institutions such as Illumina, Qualcomm, ViaSat, Hologic, Cubic, Cymer, Thermo Fisher Scientific, MilliporeSigma, and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute; PLUS San Diego favorites like the Fleet Science Center and the Children’s Discovery Museum.
The ninth annual expo day at Petco Park is over, but there are more than 60 events this week at locations throughout the county. Most are free. Visit www.lovestemsd.org for a schedule of events.
