SAN DIEGO – Dec. 9, 2014 – San Diego REPertory Theatre’s (San Diego REP) production of “Honky” by Greg Kalleres and directed by Sam Woodhouse was recently filmed as a pilot episode for “OnStage in America,” a brand-new primetime television series set to air nationally on public television.
The mission of “OnStage in America” will tape and broadcast the very best productions from American regional theatre in a fresh and exciting format. The show, funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign last January, highlights productions using innovative filming techniques allowing viewers to experience the depth and drama of the most creative productions on the stage in the United States. This will allow the San Diego REP’s production of “Honky” to be brought right into the living rooms of a fresh new set of audiences.
After the national broadcast on public television, the taping of “Honky” will become part of a digital library, viewable for on-demand, streaming, and other digital distribution allowing these productions to live on for all prosperity.
“Our production of ‘Honky’ being selected by ‘OnStage in America’ to be the pilot production for a new national television series means a great deal to the artists and staff of San Diego REP,” says Sam Woodhouse, co-founder and artistic director, San Diego REP. “We are proud and grateful that OnStage in America has recognized the high quality of our artistic work and our role as an important player in the landscape of professional regional theatre in America.”
About “Honky” at San Diego REP
The New York Times calls “Honky” “a hilarious play by Greg Kalleres… keeps you laughing from start to finish.” Inspired by his experience as a writer of TV commercials, Kalleres’ satire begins with the shooting death of a young black teenager because of his trendy new “Sky Max” basketball shoes, echoing incidents that occurred in 1989 over Air Jordan shoes. “Honky” is comedy about race, consumerism, marketing and a drug that can claims to cure racism.
“Honky” ran Saturday, Nov. 15 through Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 in the Lyceum Space. Sam Woodhouse, co-founder and artistic director, San Diego REP, directed. Jacole Kitchen served as assistant director. Cast included: Gerard Joseph as Thomas; Jacque Wilke as Andie; Fran Gercke as Peter; James Newcomb as Davis; Tanya Alexander as Emilia; Jacob Bruce as Dr. Driscoll/Abraham Lincoln; Deleon Dallas as Kid #1/Frederick Douglass; and Cortez Johnson as Kid #2.
