SAN DIEGO – Nov. 17, 2014 – Hundreds of people attended a community celebration and grand re-opening of Regency Centers’ Balboa Mesa Shopping Center on Saturday, Nov. 15. The revitalization brings new life to the 45 year-old center with an enhanced shopping experience, and a dramatic enhancement to the Balboa Ave. and Genesee Ave. intersection, which many consider to be a prominent gateway into the Clairemont Mesa area.
San Diego City Councilmember Lorie Zapf recognized Regency Centers’ commitment to the community and the successful redevelopment of the shopping center. “The Balboa Mesa Shopping Center is the centerpiece of the Clairemont Mesa community and the revitalization of this property will make a wonderful difference in the ambiance of the neighborhood,” said Councilmember Zapf. “Both the community and Regency should be commended for their hard work in agreeing upon such a special project.”
Additionally, Regency Centers presented generous financial donations to support local school and community enhancement programs. The firm donated $5,000 to be allocated evenly between the Clairemont Hills Kiwanis, the Clairemont Mesa Education Foundation, Clairemont High School Foundation, Horizon Christian Academy and the Foundation of James Madison High School.
“Regency hosted today’s grand re-opening celebration to thank the Clairemont Mesa community,” said Gregg Sadowsky, Senior Vice President, Senior Market Officer, Regency Centers. “We have appreciated their support and patience during the renovation process, which started last year, and hope the community enjoys all of the new shopping and dining opportunities.”
Located at 5500 Balboa Avenue, Balboa Mesa Shopping Center occupies over 210,000 square feet of space and serves a three-mile radius of nearly 130,000 people. Redevelopment of the center, originally built in 1969, began May 1, 2013 and, in that time, Regency Centers filled every single vacancy.
Balboa Mesa’s LEED certified, eco-friendly renovation includes new shops and restaurants, as well as enhanced pedestrian connectivity, outdoor seating areas, parking, bioswales, lighting, landscaping, signage, exterior paint, and stone accents. New merchants include Boudin Bakery, Chicken Charlie’s FryBQ, Doctor’s Express Urgent Care, Great Clips, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Luna Grill, Ototo Sushi Company, Clairemont Smiles, Pieology Pizzeria, San Diego County Credit Union, The Habit Burger Grill, The Vitamin Shoppe, and 85°C Bakery Café. This will be the first San Diego location for Taiwan-based 85°C Bakery Café, and the first brick and mortar location for Chicken Charlie’s FryBQ, known from the San Diego County, Orange County and Los Angeles County fairs.
