SAN DIEGO – August 19, 2014 – The Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common will host ‘Booked for the Evening,’ a rooftop soiree fundraiser hosted by the Library Shop on Sept. 11, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Guests will be whisked to the ninth floor rooftop patio and enter a “literary-chic” themed party featuring a selection of fresh, locally sourced food and beverage creations by Tabe BBQ and Please & Thank You Bar, live music by Gypsy Groove, and featured artists mixing and mingling with guests under the glow of twinkling lights. The event celebrates the opening of “Hiding in Plain Sight: Eight Voices in Contemporary Photography,” featuring the work of San Diego’s most talented photographers who are exploring the creative boundaries of photography. Proceeds from the event support the San Diego Public Library System.
Tickets are just $25 per person, and are predicted to go quickly, as the first Booked for the Evening fundraiser held in May 2014 opened to an overflow crowd who enjoyed a rare opportunity to enjoy the library’s beautiful ninth floor after hours. For the price of admission, guests will be able to experience the new show, hear from the curator, mingle with artists, and participate in small-group tours of the library’s art spaces. The ticketed event includes food and one drink.
The Library Shop is funded through a partnership between the San Diego Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library serving as a bridge between the local library and the branch system. The Library Shop operates as a business, but gives all proceeds back to the entire library system supporting literacy and education throughout all of San Diego.

About “Hiding in Plain Sight: Eight Voices in Contemporary Photography”
Using a wide range of approaches to photography—a medium undergoing significant technological and creative change—the artists draw a connection between San Diego and the global dialog with the medium. Taken as a whole, their collective output encompasses historic darkroom practices to cutting edge digital processes, as well as digital video, and unorthodox approaches using traditional photographic materials. The photographs on view introduce visitors to thought-provoking conceptual practices of the medium, images exploring beauty and its connection to our everyday world, while others invite us to consider how the regional landscape offers renewed vision and creativity when seen through an artist’s lens.
Curated by Scott Davis, Hiding in Plain Sight provides a window into the current state of contemporary photography, while celebrating some of the region’s most talented and
Each of the artists included in this exhibition (Andy Cross, Amanda Dahlgren, Judith Fox, John Brinton Hogan, Michael Mulno, Han Nguyen, Scott Polach, and Rebecca Webb) live and work in the San Diego region, adding to the cultural vibrancy of our community.
Hiding in Plain Sight opens Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 in the Art Gallery on the ninth floor of the Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common. It will run through Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.
