SAN DIEGO – Nov. 12, 2015 – Home of Guiding Hands (HGH), an organization committed to providing marked community support, critical housing, and life skills training for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in San Diego County is seeking donations from the community to deliver at the organization’s annual holiday parties. The parties have become a favorite holiday tradition for the Home of Guiding Hands clients and the public’s help is needed to support 31 parties at group residences all around San Diego County. Many of the clients the organization serves have limited funds and don’t have family members nearby. The annual holiday parties provide a sense of belonging for both the clients and the community who help make the season a special time for all.
“Our annual holiday parties bring smiles and cheer to those who don’t have the resources or support,” said Mark Klaus, president and CEO, Home of Guiding Hands. “This holiday season we have more than 200 people who live in one of 31 group residences. Participating in this unique hands-on event will make a huge impact in the lives of our clients this holiday season.”
From businesses to school clubs, churches to families, groups of all types can help clients have a joyous and memorable season this year by collecting and donating gift items. Ideas include: gift certificates to restaurants, shops, hair and nail salons; DVD/Blu-Ray players, iPods, CD/MP3 players with radio, and headphones; crockpots, blenders, and large kitchen appliances; linens (kitchen towels, twin sheet sets and comforters; bath towels, washcloths); pots and pans, dishes, glasses, baking dishes, silverware, plastic storage containers; and gaming systems such as Wii, Playstations, etc.; Books, art supplies, puzzles, board games. Financial donations are also welcome. Each home, which hosts up to six residents, is located in San Diego County.
Dave Walker, a member of HGH’s board of governors and the CEO of Avista Technologies, Inc. based in Carlsbad, and his wife have supported the holiday parties program at Home of Guiding Hands for many years. In addition to the personally adopting homes for the holidays, Walker dresses up like Santa and delivers gifts to the residents. “This is an opportunity to take a little extra time out of my busy day to visit some of the HGH homes during their Christmas parties,” says Walker. “Every home I have visited has energized my soul and warmed my heart in so many ways. The experience leaves me wanting to work harder and it reminds me of why I do exist.”
For more gift ideas, please visit the HGH website or call Pamela Starmack at 619-938-2855. Donations and gifts should be delivered to the team at Home of Guiding Hands no later than Nov. 30, as the holiday parties occur in early December.
