Home of Guiding Hands Presents 6th Annual Randy Jones Run/Walk Event on Feb. 6
December, 2015 Client News

SAN DIEGO – Dec. 23, 2015 – Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) will hold its 6th Annual Randy Jones Run/Walk for Independence (2K/8K) on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay Park. Early bird registration is currently open, discounted rates are available through Jan. 15, 2016 at 10 pm. Online registration is effective up to race day and onsite. To participate, please visit www.randyjonesrunwalk.org.

HGH aspires to help people – children, adolescents and adults – with intellectual and developmental disabilities thrive in a setting that offers a more fulfilling lifestyle, provides individualized attention, stresses increased opportunities for self-sufficiency, and encourages greater community integration and access. The event aims to unite the community by ensuring those served by HGH are able to live a life of dignity, purpose, and are not limited by what they cannot do, but enriched by what they can do.

“We serve more than 1,500 individuals with developmental disabilities per year and our hope is to instill courage, and independence in their lives through our various life skills training programs,” said President and CEO of Home of Guiding Hands, Mark Klaus. “This is an underserved population in need of critical funding and our 6th Annual Randy Jones Run/Walk for Independence event helps us give back to a community that needs more recognition, encouragement and support.”

The event’s namesake, San Diego Padres Hall of Famer Randy Jones, was recently named Home of Guiding Hands’ Community Partner of the Year. As a longtime supporter of the organization, Jones has volunteered and promoted several HGH events since the mid-70s, including its annual Gala. He also regularly donates certificates, Padres memorabilia and more to fulfill the organization’s wish list items. Thanks to Jones, the Run/Walk for Independence has raised more than $125,000 since it’s inception. A special post-race meet and greet with Jones will take place at 11:00 a.m., where he will sign autographs and take pictures.

All proceeds from the event directly benefit HGH’s current programs here in San Diego County: residential homes, community living, early childhood development, life planning and more. To reach as many individuals of this underserved population as possible, HGH offers several life skills training programs to the local community, which requires more than 500,000 hours of direct service annually in the organization’s 31 residence homes alone. To continue this proactive work, critical funds and volunteer support are needed. After last year’s success of raising nearly $35,000, the organization aims to raise $40,000 at the 2016 event.
