SAN DIEGO – MARCH 2, 2015 – On March 14, 2015, the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, presented by Illumina, will kick-off their annual week of fun-filled festivities celebrating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with educational programs for teachers and students. The festival aims to encourage and get kids excited about science and related fields to inspire them to be tomorrow’s STEM innovators.
The festival has many opportunities available for industry professionals and passionate individuals willing to speak on various STEM related topics:
- The Nifty 50 Speaker Series features innovative science and engineer professionals drawn from industry, local research organizations and universities who are partnered with teachers and students from regional schools studying STEM topics that match the area of their expertise to present exciting and interactive presentations. Additionally, the all new STEM Ambassador Pilot Program also gives the opportunity to two dozen college students to participate as “STEM Ambassadors” during festival week. Ambassadors are then paired with a Nifty Fifty mentor and are invited to participate in classroom presentations.
- EXPO Day “Ask Me Booth.” There are still spots available for STEM professionals to participate in the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering’s EXPO Day “Ask Me Booth” at Petco Park on March 21. Professionals are given an “Ask Me I’m A Scientist (or Engineer)” buttons and placed in a lounge setting for students to interview. Volunteers answer questions and inspire children and adults who hope to become a scientist or engineer in the future. Various times for shifts are available.
- Fireside Chats. These are mini TED type talks by local industry professionals in an intimate setting that will give EXPO attendees a chance to listen, learn and ask questions. The Fireside Chats are held in the Mercado areas.
- More than 80,000 kids, parents, scientists, educators and community members are expected to participate in festival week activities and EXPO Day. Full details and program applications are posted on the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering website: http://www.lovestemsd.org.
